Our Story

Years ago, we visited Walt Disney World an average of five times yearly. We were (and still are) annual passholders who visited whenever possible.

We had no budget, so we splurged on the most expensive hotels and felt like we had to do every “new” thing that Disney offered.

Naturally, those extras began to add up. Before I knew it (or at least could come to terms with it), I had massive credit card debt. One day, after venting about my financial issues to a loved one, that person reminded me of the obvious:

“I bet you have no idea how much you spend on all those vacations you take.”

Ouch! Was I supposed to know that? So, for fun, I sifted through the numbers and came up with an unexaggerated one-year total a little shy of $25,000.00.

Seeing the number was sobering, but not enough to make me give up our vacations. I worked all the time, and our vacations were the reward. Years later, I finally figured it out. Looking back, I realize I could have vacationed as much as I wanted if I had known how to budget.

Sure, sometimes we might have had to postpone a trip. Other times, we could have missed a few dining experiences or stayed at a regular hotel instead of a fancy one. Or I might have given up a few things in our day-to-day budget to allow for more vacation time.

Most of all, I learned one huge factor–you can’t budget for something when you have no idea how much it costs.

Most people start with a number when planning a Walt Disney World vacation. For example, you might have $5000.00 in mind as your total vacation budget.

Unfortunately, I’ve learned the hard way starting with a restrictive number is setting yourself up for failure. It’s also not realistic until you’ve analyzed the details.

Have you heard the old idiom, “The devil is in the details?” It’s so true. Adding your hotel room, tickets, and transportation costs may seem enough. However, small items, especially things you haven’t thought of beforehand, can become complicated and likely cause problems.

Yes and No. You can access the initial planning spreadsheet on your phone. It’s great for checking your numbers if needed in a pinch. But we recommend doing your initial planning and data entry on a laptop or desktop computer. We’ve also added a few planning printable PDFs for those who prefer to write out the numbers on paper before they enter them into the spreadsheet.

Our second spreadsheet (the During and After version) can be used from your phone during your vacation. It has a place to enter your expenses as they occur. For example, if you buy breakfast first thing in the morning, you can enter “breakfast” and the amount you spent. It will automatically deduct the expense from the budget you previously set.

You DON’T HAVE to use this secondary spreadsheet during your vacation. But we created this option to give you a simple way to keep up with expenses while you’re traveling. If you’re on a tight budget, you’re going to want to use this option. It will help you stay aware of how much you’ve spent and make it easier to say no when you’re tempted to splurge.
